Panaitan Island Surfing


Panaitan surfing Situated just off the coast of West Java, Panaitan Island hosts 7 excellent surf spots including the legendary One Palm Point and Apocalypse. ( Map )

Panaitan is rich of wildlife and now you can surf its world class waves in warm, clear blue water away from crowds.

Panaitan is part of Ujung Kulon national park, which is a United Nations World Heritage site. Our boats have the required government permits to take you to these great waves.

There has been controversy in the surfing community about surfing at Panaitan, particularly about a landbased surfcamp on the island. We offer two types of stay: on a boat or on the nearby island of Peucang which is in use by park rangers. Therefore, we leave Panaitan and the park as we found it.

Surfing Spot

One Palm Point
The wave that put Panaitan on the map. One of the world's longest (upto 800 yards), most perfect, most dangerous shallow left-hand barrelsreels across a reef point. You need a sturdy board to get into the waveas early as possible, then set a rail and go for maximum speed. Midtide seems best and the wave starts to work at just 3ft of south tosouthwest swell.

Napalams
Probably the most frequently surfed wave at Panaitan, and with goodreason. The left-hand reef here delivers barrels with mechanicalperfection, and they are more makeable than One Palm thanks to adefined channel. Take-offs are straight-forward, then a lined-up wallleads to a full-on barrel before tapering off into deep water. Highertides are best if you want to avoid the shallow second section.

Inside Lefts / Pussy's
At the head of the inner bay are some very well lined up, fun longlefts. Generally a good warm-up spot for Panaitan proper, the leftsneed a good south swell but work at any tide, although low is oftenbest.

Inside Rights
Opposite the lefts, on the west side of the bay is a right-hand reefbreak that works on wet season west breezes and any swell direction. Asolid south swell at low tide will get this alternative spot firing.Best at lower to mid tides, but varying with swell size.

Illusions
Right-hand reef break with approachable take-off and variable barrel and wall sections.

Apocalypse
Extremely square right-hand barrel; pull in or don't go at all :-)

Trip Availablelity
